Ripping MP3/WMA from CD's you own . . .

Just a follow-up on this post. I haven't really seen a definitive answer, but is it legal or illegal for me to rip my stock pile of legit store bough CD's?

Mitch, in answer to your question... you can definitely rip your CD's so long as you are the only one that listens to them. So, for example, you couldn't have one on your MuVo that you were listening to on the train while your wife listened to the CD at home.

When you need to license multiple (synchronous) copies of music you need to start looking towards Media Server.

I remember reading to my shock in an Australian MacWorld that it was illegal to *backup* or rip CDs even for yourself. Here's what a google found:

hrmm, that's interesting. My comment was based on an application that I built for a client (a library) a year or so ago where they wanted to be able to distribute their CD music via touchscreen panels to library patrons. What we did was to rip all the music and to use an embedded WMP to play the music via a WinForms app.

Reading through the document which Serdar linked to, we were probably covered by the following provision:

I know that we did seek some legal advice at the time.

Anyways, I hope that (after following my advice) you are not reading this from prison! :-)

I'm not sure if the site is authoritive, its not actually representing policy, but rather interpreting it. Still, quite an interesting read - thanks!

I believe that ripping your own CD's for personal use would be covered by the copyright concept of "fair use".
